Lente (U-40 porcine insulin zinc suspension; Vetsulin, Merck Animal Health) is an intermediate-acting insulin commonly used by the Task Force in dogs. It is FDA approved for use in dogs and cats. It has a close to 12 hr duration of action in most dogs and is useful for minimizing postprandial hyperglycemia.
Lente insulin is an intermediate-acting insulin that starts working about 1.5 hours after it is injected. The effect is maximal between 4 and 8 hours and ends as long as 24 hours after injection. The time-course of action of insulin may vary in different people and at different times in the same person.
For decades, lente insulin was used as a basal insulin, designed to mimic the body's continual slow release of insulin throughout the day. Compared to NPH insulin, lente insulin has a similar but more protracted loss of action after a dose is administered.
